We study them, millenia ago,
Who painted caves, for ritual, or reason,
And left us very little we might know –
But that, enduring epoch, century, season,
They knew of beauty. Some could capture line,
Enslaving it in rock with ochre, dust,
Bequeathing time itself in their design,
And likely knowing only that they must.
And children likely playing at their side.
Or knocking precious pigment to the ground,
Or mixing colors no one’s ever tried,
For just because. The artist looks around,
And sees a god emerging from the stone.
Then gives the child some colors of their own.
